In this wonderfully inspired picture book, the author illustrates what he imagines while listening to David Bowie’s classic song. But of course it does, and in a way that fans of Bowie’s song will find quite clever. Regrettably since it is not easy to find a digital copy, but you can find it here So, yeah, as a means of self-promotion: Everything looks shiny and new, everybody is smiling and happy, and there’s no reason to think anything is going to go wrong. If you’re familiar with Space Oddity and if you’re not, drop everything and go listen to it you realise it’s not really suited for a children’s book.

We’ve spotlighted the illustrator’s work a couple of times before, first for his groovy representations of The Walking Dead and other beloved artifacts of pop culture, and most recently for his work with some of comics, film and television’s most famous double-acts like The Muppets’ Bunson and Beaker and Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob, but in the style of carved wooden blocks.

The tale of doomed Major Tom plays out in Kolb’s bright and retro animation style, giving a face to the legendary Bowie character and making the conclusion that much sadder.

David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ Recreated As Children’s Book [Read + Listen]

Without giving too much away, Kolb looked to the curious lyric, “And the stars look very different today” as a way to depict what exactly went wrong far above the moon. Every lyric paints such a vivid picture that I figured “Oh hey, I guess I’ll make that into a ovdity book! Thanks for telling us about the problem. Of course, as it could also be darker by the end of Major Tom, but that will be the kllb of someone else cause they have to visualize the lyrics in another way, for my part I think the way it is done is pretty cute, tender and maintains the tone and essence of Bowie.

Its popularity follows another recent children’s book internet sensation, the tongue-in-cheek bedtime story Go the Fuck to Sleep, which andrdw the top of Amazon.
