It feels like the author was not comfortable with the mystery aspect of the story so he added action scenes to spice it up. In one plot line you have Jax Pavan and his comrades trying to solve a murder mystery in order to clear their own names – since they are under suspicion for it.

The writing was crisp and easy to read, the story was great, and it brough back memories of watching old-school television detectives such as Jessica Fletcher and Columbo. Close to a hundred billion of them actually, not excluding Darth Vader or the Emperor himself. Jax is with Whiplash to night get people off Coruscant I didn’t find his motivation to come across very convincingly – sure, he wants revenge, but merely stated it doesn’t make him seem like a very realistic character.
There’s a third, slightly less important, plot running alongside the previous two. Again, Reaves thrives at giving personality and character to his own creations, but again, like with the last bookhe falls short at portraying the already established character of Vader.
Really like the idea of the Grey Paladin’s as well. The series is worth the read as long as you read the final book “The Last Jedi” not written by Reaves.
Now that Jax and Deejah are as good as suspects, it’s up to him to find the real murderer and end the case before the “cools” that’s the local law enforcement get too involved and discover Jax’s many secrets, putting him and Whiplash in a lot of danger.
Reaves seems like he has a great handle on writing the Star Wars EU. Speaking of the Empire, he’s also trying to hide from Vader’s Jedi Hunters, and also trying to hide from another kind of feeling. It isn’t among the best, but it is far better than the worst. And that side story with Typho? Reaves introduces Dejah, the partner to the murdered artist, as a third point in a love triangle that didn’t even exist in the first book.
The group decides to help the partner of a famous artist by solving his murder. I’m not one to judge, but I’m betting Typho loses. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it. I do wish the characters were seen in other Star Wars novels.
