But all of that I could have lived with. Mostly, I tolerate this pretty well. Book cover art by Danilo Ducak. One problem to acknowledge up-front: The prose is generally good, and the characters sufficiently interesting that I was able to get through it. His characters are real and I could easily visualize the world.
McDevitt is very good at imagining strange challenges—and at picturing humans coping when things don’t work out as planned. Some years after the last with some better technology in place and exploring farther away from home. One drawback, besides the lack mcdefitt time, is that there must be as little contact with the natives as possible, so as to prevent, or at least, minimize “culture shock”.
Now it is gone. Oh my God, I thought it would never end.
Very early on in this novel the Academy are trying to salvage what they can from an already Omega-scarred world which is about to be revisited. The society of the Goombahs is examined in such great depth that readers will feel they have actually visited their planet.
The part I hated about this book was that the Omega cloud were vastly different than they were in “The Engines of God”. The series features an Academy pilot, Hutch, who everyone loves.

In a large auditorium they find a statue of what could be the architect; a tall alien beastie but wearing garments that overly resemble Twentieth Century European attire. Granted, the book moved slowly in places, but the romance between Digger and Kellie is sweet and kind of charming. Think about it Jack! However, if you are the impatient sort you should perhaps take note that this novel has a bit of a long build-up before, well, you know.
