I honestly skipped whole huge parts of maann book. Over the years, the work has both reflected and shaped changes in the field of ethnography. John Van Maanen, anexperienced ethnographer of modern organizational structures, is one who believes that the real work begins when he returns to his office with cartons of notes and tapes.

This is a book about the deskwork of fieldwork and the various ways culture is put forth in print. I was entertained and surprised by Van Maanen’s writing. In some quarters this is heresy. Even better, this has given me some ideas for my own writing.
